Red flags in early stage deals

Dear Reader, you know that feeling of immense pride that engulfs you when someone you groomed surpasses you? That’s the exact feeling that I have for the past few weeks now. We started this newsletter with the intent of providing relevant content to our angel investor community. Our efforts were always focussed on bringing information that matters to you and helps you in your investment journey, put together in the simplest way possible. And we are grateful for the love that you have shown - 30%+ open rates consistently (these are by the way unheard of figures for a newsletter).

To maintain this consistency, we needed top quality content, themes and presentation. And the credit for pulling this off goes to the entire team. Especially to Khushdeep, our content strategist, who has been leading this from the front. In today’s edition, I would formally like to pass on the baton to her. She is going to be the new editor for Insider by Favcy starting from this edition.

Is your portfolio the fairest of them all?

Dear Reader, by now you might have sipped the shocking downfall of Lido Learning. While it came as a shock to the startup community, it surfaced many different faces of the same.

On one end, we witnessed the supportive side of the ecosystem as many companies came forth to support the sudden unemployment faced by all the employees of the company.

Is your whatsapp group the next unicorn?

Dear Reader, we encourage our network of angels to make their first startup investments with 1stCheque. It’s manageable to follow up and keep track for the first few investments but what do you do as you expand and diversify your portfolio? How do you track and manage your startup portfolio that you have perhaps built by sourcing deals from multiple channels? Should you use a portfolio management software or the good old excel can help you track your exit timelines? We answered a lot of these questions in our Angel Bytes section this week. Scroll down to read.

Additionally, in our Favcy Review section this week we decode the freshly introduced crypto tax policy by the government.

Do you like your whiskey neat?

Dear Reader, we just ended the Season 1 of Shark Tank India and truly the show has given new wings to entrepreneurship dreams of an entire nation. From housewives talking about average order value on the show to whole families sitting together every weekday night to enjoy the show, there’s a lot of good things the show has to boast about. While there are a lot of hits, there are a few misses as well. We bring out these in our Short Take section this week.

I am sure you all have tried the services from Urban Company by now. But have you ever wondered how they make their money? On the outside Urban Company looks like a marketplace for service providers, but if you dissect their revenue streams, it's a pure play sales enablement company. 85% of their revenue comes from commissions on product sales to their vendors. To learn more about the model, jump to our Beyond the Bottomline section.
